As a conductor Max has worked with leading groups for contemporary music including Ensemble Contrechamps [Neu Records release], EnsembleKollektiv Berlin [Sub Rosa Records release], ensemble mosaik, and Ensemble Apparat [NO HAY DISCOS — forthcoming release] among others, performing at venues including the Konzerthaus Berlin and L'Auditori, Barcelona. In 2023, 2024 and 2026 he directed performances at the Ultraschall Festival Berlin — each being broadcast live over Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

From 2016 to 2020 he was the conductor of Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' Symphony Orchestra: an award-winning American community orchestra dedicated to core orchestral repertoire. During this time he founded and directed a Bach cantata series in collaboration with the Harvard Art Museums.
