As a conductor Max has worked with leading groups for contemporary music including Ensemble Contrechamps [Neu Records — forthcoming release], and EnsembleKollektiv Berlin [Sub Rosa Records release], among others. In 2023 and 2024 he directed performances at the Ultraschall Festival Berlin with EnsembleKollektiv Berlin, and Ensemble Apparat respectively — both performances being broadcast live over Deutschlandfunk Kultur.
From 2016 to 2020 he was the conductor of Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' Symphony Orchestra: an award-winning American community orchestra dedicated to core orchestral repertoire. During this time he founded and directed a Bach cantata series in collaboration with the Harvard Art Museums.
